  • PG-13 cert, 155min. Dir: Denis Villeneuve

Despite the gritty plot and complex world of Dune, this cinematic masterpiece is a precise depiction to behold. Alongside outstanding visual effects, Denis Villeneuve's portrayal of the classic 1965 novel creates a truly immersive experience from beginning to end, transporting you effortlessly to the mystifying lands of Arrakis.

As an admirer of Frank Herberts' novels, I was certainly not disappointed with the outcome of this accurate illustration, especially having seen a few of my favourite novels 'butchered' once reaching the big screen.

Timothée Chalamet, who portrays Paul Atreides, masterfully displays the ways in which his character handles the burdens placed upon him. However, he appears to lack both the vulnerability and slight naivety presented from Paul within the novel. This may be a consequence of selecting a more mature actor, to take on an adolescent role.

In addition to this, in the 2 hours and 35 minutes of enthralling plot, an opportunity was missed in presenting the deep and complex relationship between Duke Leto (Oscar Issac) and Lady Jessica Atreides (Rebecca Ferguson).

Whilst I would normally ignore this minute detail, Jessica’s role as a concubine to the Duke, despite her duty as a Bene Gesserit, is a relationship worthy of further devoted time.

Leaving the film on a cliff-hanger, resulted in a feeling of dissatisfaction and emptiness. Nevertheless, Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros have announced there will be a Dune: Part Two. The release date has been announced November 3rd 2023, so viewers won't have to wait long for the next chapter in the saga.

Frank Herbert, author of Dune, wrote, "the mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience" and every factor of Dune displays this perfectly. The world and life of Arrakis, is depicted magnificently through character, pace, and visual effects, creating an exquisite experience I guarantee any viewer will become helplessly immersed within.

In cinemas from Thursday October 21
