ABOUT

My goal for “A League of Her Own” is to inspire more girls to play football, whilst motivating those that already do.

When I was growing up, I noticed the lack of media coverage of female football compared to men’s coverage, which I still believe is a problem today.

I hope this blog brings us one step closer to bridging this gap and raising awareness surrounding women’s football.

My name is Amy Dobbin, I am 18 years old and a Journalism student at the University of Portsmouth. Growing up in Wiltshire, I came from a football-loving household full of avid-Liverpool supporters.

I eventually joined my first team the age of eight, developing a passion for the sport and have continued to play ever since.

My biggest role model, is my mum who, played when she was at university. This encouraged me to see a different perspective of the sport, after hearing of the struggles and barriers she too faced, when playing football as a woman.

Over the years I have experienced teams folding due to a lack of players and at one stage there wasn’t a league for girls my age in my local area at all.

I have commonly experienced the assumption that I must be poorly skilled at football, because of my gender

Although it has made staying motivated difficult at times, it has taught me the key skills of determination, adversity, and commitment. By raising awareness, I want to help tackle some of these issues and encourage more girls to play.

This is something I hope to reflect into my blog. From posting recent changes in the FA’s guidelines, to interviewing Female role models and players changing the game, I want to highlight the perspective of football that is commonly shadowed.
